Bobby Zengel says he has been working at Towson University for “about 11 months, nine days, two hours and 49 minutes.” Talking to Bobby, it is clear he has a head for numbers and an eye for detail, and such an exact approximation is perhaps to be expected. He also considers sitting at a desk and having his own cubicle to be job perks.
After serving for eight years in the military as an airplane mechanic, he considers desk work a welcome change of pace. “It isn’t that I disliked the work, but it was not something I wanted to do for my whole life. Working on airplanes entails a lot of manual labor,” he explains. Not long after leaving the military, Bobby enrolled in school and got a degree in finance. After graduation he worked at the Harford County Department of Social Services for a few months before applying for his current job at TU.
His position in Administration and Finance as a PeopleSoft Financial Systems Specialist seems to be a perfect match. In addition to his desk, Bobby really appreciates the technology at Towson. Growing up on the cusp of the digital era, he explains that he tries to read up on new tech and keep up with current computer technology. Working as part of the DECO grant workflow team, he uses and appreciates the benefits of technology first-hand, transferring paper documents into electronic files and tracking their progress in the system. By contrast, “at Social Services, there were so many paper files that they had reached the weight capacity for the building’s floors,” he recalls.
Bobby also processes invoices and payroll, maintains the student financial feed, trains for ProCard Reallocation System and maintains the online ProCard system, and transmits financial information to Annapolis. While talking about the work he does here, Bobby compares it to his past experiences, national statistics, and politics, estimating and approximating facts, figures and statistics with almost unnerving precision.
Bobby also has a good sense of balance in his life. Outside of work, Bobby is into music and plays guitar. After playing in a number of local bands over the years, he isn’t currently involved with a group but still enjoys playing music with friends when he can. Additionally, Bobby recently became a homeowner, and spends a lot of time working on his new home. Growing up, he was familiar with working on houses, and enjoys making his house truly his.
