Did You Know?

Earlier this month, a Kazakhstan delegation which included administrators from two of the country’s leading universities met with A&F staff to learn about campus sustainability. Director of Architecture & Engineering David Mayhew and Director of Energy Engineering & Conservation Dennis Bohlayer shared information about TU’s green building projects and discussed best practices related to campus sustainability.

The TUPD won honorable mention in the 2014 Maryland Chiefs of Police Association and Maryland Sherriffs’ Association Law Enforcement Challenge. The challenge judged the efforts of police departments in identifying, communicating and enforcing traffic safety problems such as impaired driving and speeding. The challenge is sponsored by the Maryland Highway Safety Office.

Events

Football has begun! The Tigers’ home opener vs. Central Connecticut is tomorrow, August 30 at 6 p.m. in Unitas Stadium. See you there!

New York Times bestselling author Wes Moore will talk about his life and book, “The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates” in the SECU Arena Tuesday, September 2. Doors open at 6 p.m.; for more information call 410-704-2332.

TU offers drop-in dance classes for adults Monday through Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings beginning September 2. Ballet, jazz, tap and modern dance are all offered; prices range from $11 – $14 for a single class, multi-class packages are offered at discounted rates. Go here for more information.

Tailgate with A&F Saturday, September 20 before the Tigers take on North Carolina Central. The tailgate is from 4 – 5:45 p.m., the football game starts at 6. For more information or to RSVP, email Kelly Crispo.

More than 1,200 athletes will compete in a variety of events on campus during the Maryland Special Olympics June 6 – 8. Come watch for a healthy dose of heartwarming inspiration.

An exhibition of travel-inspired student artwork opens June 12 with a 7:30 p.m. reception in the Center for the Arts Atrium. The artwork is a tribute to the late professor Ron Cubbison, whose fellowship enabled the travel of five TU art students.

The TUPD has received a $10,000 grant from BG&E to place basic life support kits in the department’s vehicles. This is the first corporate grant given to the TUPD.

Events

TU is participating in RecycleMania from February 2 to March 29. The competition pits more than 400 colleges and universities nationwide against one another to see who can have the highest recycling percentages and the least amount of waste. Results will be announced in April.

The A&F Annual Meeting and ACE Award Presentation will be held from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, December 18 in the West Village Commons Ballrooms.

The Campus Holiday Celebration hosted by President Maravene Loeschke will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, December 12 in the University Union’s Potomac Lounge.

Awards & Accreditations

Nick Gingue, Associate Director of Event and Conference Services, won the Rising Star Scholarship from the National Association of College Auxiliary Services (NACAS). The Award is given to four Auxiliary Services employees nationwide who have provided excellent services and demonstrated the ability and desire to excel in the field of auxiliary services management. As part of the award, Nick received $1,000 to attend the NACAS Annual Conference. The award is sponsored by The Spelman & Johnson Group.

Awards

This fall, the Richmond and Newell Hall renovation project was the beneficiary of four awards for outstanding craftsmanship at the 75th Annual Craftsman Awards sponsored by the Building Congress and Exchange of Metropolitan Baltimore. The awards honored the buildings’ terracotta, cast stone, masonry and roofing work.  Congratulations to everyone involved on the project on this well-deserved recognition!

Weekend Planner

Not sure what to this weekend or just sick of doing the same old things? Spice up your weekend by attending one of these great TU events. 

  • Watch the No. 15 girls lacrosse team take on No. 12 Penn State on Saturday, May 12 at 3 p.m., right here at Johnny Unitas Stadium.  The matchup is a part of the first round of NCAA playoffs and is sure to be a good one. Click here to buy your tickets to cheer on the team.  Go Tigers!   
  • The UStore is holding its annual Spring Sale so it’s the perfect time to stock up on some new Towson gear. All regularly priced clothing is 20% off and selected clearance items are 25% to 50% off.  Hurry there before the sale ends on Saturday, May 26 and all of the great deals are gone!
  • This weekend the Towson University Field Station, located in Monkton, is holding an open house.  The TU Field Station provides biology students with hands-on learning experiences in the wilderness.  On Saturday, May 12 from noon to 4 p.m. alumni and community members can spend their day learning about local wildlife, take nature walks or just enjoy some hot dogs and hamburgers.  For more information click here or contact Alumni Relations at x4-2234.
  • Looking for more of a cultural experience this weekend?  Well the Center for the Arts has plenty planned to satisfy that craving. The student production of Bacchai is playing this weekend along with the Dance Department’s last show of the semester, Intersections.  It’s also your last chance of the academic year to check out the Greater Baltimore Youth Orchestra.  Whatever performance you choose, it’s sure to be outstanding!

TU has launched two new construction websites to share photos and information about current and completed campus construction. Take a look at the pages and view the slideshows to see the progression of new buildings on campus!

TU was selected by PETA2 as one of the most vegan-friendly colleges in the US for the second year in a row. The nomination was made based on the quality and quantity of vegan options available to students on campus, as well as feedback from students on the receptiveness and creativity of dining staff.

Picnic Recap

The 2011 Employee Appreciation Picnic was held Friday, June 3 on Burdick Field. TU employees and their families gathered under sunny skies for food, drinks, games and giveaways. The event was sponsored by Auxiliary Services and planned by the TU Picnic Committee, whose volunteers did a fantastic job of organizing and staffing the event. The committee is chaired by Executive Administrative Assistant Jerri Sumwalt, and its members include Lori Armstrong from Alumni Relations, Donna Auvil from the Budget Office, Robin Boord from Copies Plus, John Dahlquist from Athletics, Stacy Elofir from the University Store, Susan Fata from Event & Conference Services, Rene Florendo from Facilities Management, Brian Fritsche from Financial Services, Deneice Fusco from Human Resources, John Latteri from Athletics, Phyllis May from Financial Services, Joe Oster from Auxiliary Services, Rod Petrocci from Dining Services, Rebecca Prell from Auxiliary Services, Warren Riefner from Facilities Management, Chris Shoul from Dining Services, Valerie Smith from the Chemistry Department, Paul Thomas from Facilities Management and Renee Watkins from the Chemistry Department.
