Weekend Planner

Not sure what to this weekend or just sick of doing the same old things? Spice up your weekend by attending one of these great TU events. 

  • Watch the No. 15 girls lacrosse team take on No. 12 Penn State on Saturday, May 12 at 3 p.m., right here at Johnny Unitas Stadium.  The matchup is a part of the first round of NCAA playoffs and is sure to be a good one. Click here to buy your tickets to cheer on the team.  Go Tigers!   
  • The UStore is holding its annual Spring Sale so it’s the perfect time to stock up on some new Towson gear. All regularly priced clothing is 20% off and selected clearance items are 25% to 50% off.  Hurry there before the sale ends on Saturday, May 26 and all of the great deals are gone!
  • This weekend the Towson University Field Station, located in Monkton, is holding an open house.  The TU Field Station provides biology students with hands-on learning experiences in the wilderness.  On Saturday, May 12 from noon to 4 p.m. alumni and community members can spend their day learning about local wildlife, take nature walks or just enjoy some hot dogs and hamburgers.  For more information click here or contact Alumni Relations at x4-2234.
  • Looking for more of a cultural experience this weekend?  Well the Center for the Arts has plenty planned to satisfy that craving. The student production of Bacchai is playing this weekend along with the Dance Department’s last show of the semester, Intersections.  It’s also your last chance of the academic year to check out the Greater Baltimore Youth Orchestra.  Whatever performance you choose, it’s sure to be outstanding!

TU has launched two new construction websites to share photos and information about current and completed campus construction. Take a look at the pages and view the slideshows to see the progression of new buildings on campus!

TU was selected by PETA2 as one of the most vegan-friendly colleges in the US for the second year in a row. The nomination was made based on the quality and quantity of vegan options available to students on campus, as well as feedback from students on the receptiveness and creativity of dining staff.

Picnic Recap

The 2011 Employee Appreciation Picnic was held Friday, June 3 on Burdick Field. TU employees and their families gathered under sunny skies for food, drinks, games and giveaways. The event was sponsored by Auxiliary Services and planned by the TU Picnic Committee, whose volunteers did a fantastic job of organizing and staffing the event. The committee is chaired by Executive Administrative Assistant Jerri Sumwalt, and its members include Lori Armstrong from Alumni Relations, Donna Auvil from the Budget Office, Robin Boord from Copies Plus, John Dahlquist from Athletics, Stacy Elofir from the University Store, Susan Fata from Event & Conference Services, Rene Florendo from Facilities Management, Brian Fritsche from Financial Services, Deneice Fusco from Human Resources, John Latteri from Athletics, Phyllis May from Financial Services, Joe Oster from Auxiliary Services, Rod Petrocci from Dining Services, Rebecca Prell from Auxiliary Services, Warren Riefner from Facilities Management, Chris Shoul from Dining Services, Valerie Smith from the Chemistry Department, Paul Thomas from Facilities Management and Renee Watkins from the Chemistry Department.

Summer casual dress has begun! Business casual dress will be permitted for Towson employees beginning Tuesday, May 31 and ending the first day of fall 2011 classes, Wednesday, August 31.

The University Store’s spring sale is going on until June 4.

 

Honors and Awards

Joyce Gibson and Julie Hall, both of Financial Services, completed the University Business Certificate, one of four noncredit certificates offered by the Office of Human Resources. This certificate is designed for university employees responsible for business functions.

Michele Kreider, Procurement, completed the Workplace Professional Certificate, one of four noncredit certificates offered by the Office of Human Resources. This certificate is designed for developing the skills of our support staff.

Eric Martinez, Financial Services, won the Mr. and Mrs. Allen Gaddis Award for Writing in the 2011 Towson literary awards. The Gaddis Award is given to the best essay submitted by a Towson undergraduate. Congratulations, Eric!

Events

Rain or shine!

The faculty/staff picnic will be held on June 3rd from 4 to 8 p.m. on Burdick Field. Everyone must enter from the side of Lot 11. This event is free to all faculty, staff and university associates and their families. Food and refreshments will be served; a cash bar will also be available at your expense.

Events

The Annual TUSC Staff Development Conference will be held in the University Union on Thursday, October 13, 2011. For more information, go to www.towson.edu/tusc.

The 2011 Benefits Festival and Health Fair will be held in the Potomac Lounge Friday, April 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. All faculty, staff and retirees are welcome to attend the event.

TUSC is hosting a walking tour of the inside, outside and rooftop of the College of Liberal Arts building as part of its Brown Bag series. The tour will be led by Energy Manager Steve Kolb and begin Tuesday, April 26 at noon. For more information, go here.

 

Honors and Awards

Last month, TUPD Corporal Richard Saylor Jr. was presented with the Top Tiger Award for the month of February. Top Tigers are nominated by their colleagues via the TUSC website, http://www.towson.edu/tusc. Congratulations Rick!

Spring Events

  1. The Annual Employee Benefits Festival & Health Fair will take place Friday, April 15, 2011 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University Union’s Potomac Lounge. Stop by for free health screenings, benefits demonstrations, and of course, great giveaways.
  2. TigerFest is getting a shake up! This year’s event is being held in Unitas Stadium on a Friday, May 6. It will start at 3 p.m. and go until 10, with plenty of activities and live music.
  3. The campus community will celebrate employees’ service to the university at the Service Awards Ceremony, being held from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, May 5 in the University Union. Grab a free ticket beginning Thursday, April 7 and enjoy breakfast and networking with colleagues. More information on the ceremony is available here.
  4. Join your colleagues for food, refreshments, giveaways and entertainment at the 2011 Employee Appreciation Picnic. The event is taking place on Burdick Field June 3 from 4 to 8 p.m.
  5. Wish farewell to a host of new TU graduates at Spring Commencement! Ceremonies will be held in the Towson Center at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily from May 25 to 27. Watch a live webcast of the ceremony at http://www.towson.edu/commencement/index.asp.
