Join your colleagues for the annual A&F Pre-game Party at 5 p.m. Saturday, November 2. We’ll celebrate before the game with complimentary food and giveaways in lot 21. Then we’ll head into the game as the Tigers take on Delaware at 7 p.m.! Free game tickets and parking permits are available for employees; game tickets for guests are $8 each. The USM Women’s Forum Conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, November 15in the West Village. Speakers and featured guests include Congresswoman Donna Edwards, First Lady and Judge Katie O’Malley, and the first Maryland female Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera. Awards

This fall, the Richmond and Newell Hall renovation project was the beneficiary of four awards for outstanding craftsmanship at the 75th Annual Craftsman Awards sponsored by the Building Congress and Exchange of Metropolitan Baltimore. The awards honored the buildings’ terracotta, cast stone, masonry and roofing work.  Congratulations to everyone involved on the project on this well-deserved recognition!

Towson University Getting a New Front Door, Baltimore Sun

Debbie Phillips has returned to Towson University as the new part-time Administrative Assistant in the Office of Human Resources Training & Development unit. Debbie, a TU alumna, previously worked in TU’s Development Office and the Family Studies Department.  Welcome back Debbie!

Associate Vice President for Fiscal Planning & Services Jim Williamson is retiring effective January 1, 2012. He will be sorely missed.

Aramark’s contract with the university ended Thursday, June 30, and janitorial services are now being provided by ABM. No gaps in services are anticipated, but if you any housekeeping needs during the transition between the two vendors, please contact housekeeping directly at x4-3396.

Honors, Awards and Presentations

Cpl. George Morgan received his retirement badge plaque from the TUPD on Friday, June 3. The badge was presented to George by TUPD Sergeant Frank Remesch. It is a law enforcement tradition that an officer’s supervisor presents the officer with a badge upon retirement. Congratulations, George!

Jean Comer, Executive Administrative Assistant for the Office of Public Safety, graduated from the administrative cohort of the Building Bridges program earlier this spring. She received her certificate of completion at a ceremony at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. Congratulations, Jean!

Joe Oster, Associate Vice President for Auxiliary Services, and Pam Mooney, Director of Parking & Transportation Services, gave a presentation titled “Parking 101″ at the National Association for College Auxiliary Services (NACAS) East Conference in Annapolis this June. The presentation reviewed the current status of the parking industry, leading into a discussion on the virtual parking concept being introduced on campus this fall. The presentation was well-attended and very well-received.

Joe Oster and Ralph Valle, Marketing Director for Auxiliary Services, also gave a presentation at the NACAS East Conference on marketing the multi-million dollar area of college auxiliary services. The program focused on the need to balance your marketing strategy in today’s marketplace using a variety of social, print and direct marketing approaches in order to connect with customers and compete in business today.

Births and Deaths

Executive Administrative Assistant Bernadette Reed just became a fourth-time grandmother! Her daughter gave birth to a healthy baby boy earlier this week.

Susan Bracken Trumbull, passed away Saturday, June 25. Susan is the sister of OTS Executive Administrative Assistant Joanne Bracken. Susan is survived by a daughter. Our condolences go out to Joanne and her family.

Mail Sorting & Processing Supervisor Deborah Bowdoin will retire July 1, 2011. Best wishes, Deborah!

Jimmy Duffy was hired as the new Director of Access Control in the Office of Public Safety. Jimmy’s first day was June 21. Welcome aboard!

Longtime A&F student assistant Alfiya Galieva, who worked for Management Advisory & Compliance Services and the NRA Tax Office, has left the university. Best wishes to Alfiya!

Summer casual dress has begun! Business casual dress will be permitted for Towson employees beginning Tuesday, May 31 and ending the first day of fall 2011 classes, Wednesday, August 31.

The University Store’s spring sale is going on until June 4.

 

Honors and Awards

Joyce Gibson and Julie Hall, both of Financial Services, completed the University Business Certificate, one of four noncredit certificates offered by the Office of Human Resources. This certificate is designed for university employees responsible for business functions.

Michele Kreider, Procurement, completed the Workplace Professional Certificate, one of four noncredit certificates offered by the Office of Human Resources. This certificate is designed for developing the skills of our support staff.

Eric Martinez, Financial Services, won the Mr. and Mrs. Allen Gaddis Award for Writing in the 2011 Towson literary awards. The Gaddis Award is given to the best essay submitted by a Towson undergraduate. Congratulations, Eric!

Rain or shine!

The faculty/staff picnic will be held on June 3rd from 4 to 8 p.m. on Burdick Field. Everyone must enter from the side of Lot 11. This event is free to all faculty, staff and university associates and their families. Food and refreshments will be served; a cash bar will also be available at your expense.

The last day of classes for the spring 2011 semester is Tuesday, May 17. Exams end a week later on Tuesday, May 24.

Classes begin for the first summer 2011 session on Tuesday, May 31.

Honors and Awards

Terry Mullen (Post Office), Karen Stukes (Human Resources), and Cyndi Zile (Financial Services) completed the Management & Supervision Certificate, one of four noncredit certificates offered by the Office of Human Resources. This certificate is designed for those new to or interested in moving into management.

TU has been honored with the Certified Smoke-Free Workplace Award by the American Cancer Society. The award recognizes the university for its outstanding contributions to the global fight against cancer. For more information about the award, go to the TU Newsroom.

The 2011 Benefits Festival and Health Fair will be held in the Potomac Lounge Friday, April 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. All faculty, staff and retirees are welcome to attend the event.

TUSC is hosting a walking tour of the inside, outside and rooftop of the College of Liberal Arts building as part of its Brown Bag series. The tour will be led by Energy Manager Steve Kolb and begin Tuesday, April 26 at noon. For more information, go here.

 

Honors and Awards

Last month, TUPD Corporal Richard Saylor Jr. was presented with the Top Tiger Award for the month of February. Top Tigers are nominated by their colleagues via the TUSC website, http://www.towson.edu/tusc. Congratulations Rick!

Financial Transaction Supervisor Cyndi Zile completed the Office of Human Resources’ Workplace Professional Certificate, designed for campus support staff. Congratulations Cyndi!

Announcements and Reminders

On February 26, Police Chief Bernie Gerst jumped into the icy Deep Creek Lake during the 13th Annual Deep Creek Dunk—the Western Maryland equivalent of the Polar Bear Plunge. The event is sponsored by the Maryland State Police and raised more than $100,000 for the Special Olympics of Maryland. Read about Bernie’s experience at the Polar Bear Plunge here.

Honors and Awards

Diane Hammer in the Office of Administration & Finance and Jerri Sumwalt in Auxiliary Services completed Human Resources’ Workplace Professional Certificate, a ten-course program which is specifically designed for university support staff. Congratulations Diane and Jerri!

 

Events

The Presidential Search and Selection Committee will host a town hall meeting from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 17 in the Minnegan Room. During the meeting, TU faculty and staff will have the opportunity to share their thoughts on the qualifications that the committee should take into consideration when selecting the next president. Congratulations to Financial Services employees Linda Bohnenstengel and Jamie Uppercue for completing the Office of Human Resources’ University Business Certificate! This certificate is designed for University employees responsible for business functions.

Congratulations to Ria Zimmerman of Financial Services, Julie Leary of OTS, and Bernard Allen of OTS for earning the TUSC Top Tiger award! These individuals were nominated for the award by their colleagues and selected through a drawing during the monthly TUSC meeting.
