The University Climate Action Plan: What is it and What Does it Mean?

By Jack Nye

By signing the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) in 2007, the University community recognized the unique responsibility that institutions of higher education have as role models for their communities and in educating the people who will develop the social, economic and technological solutions to reverse global climate change and help create a thriving, civil and sustainable society.

Currently, the ACUPCC Committee has 25 members representing students, faculty, staff, alumni and administrative constituencies on campus.  It is responsible for steering, overseeing and reporting on the development and implementation of the Campus Action Plan (CAP) and all associated activities. The CAP serves as a strategy and roadmap for guiding the university to become climate neutral by 2050.

The ACUPCC Committee is currently updating and revising that planfor approval in April . More than 50 mitigation strategies have been identified, some of which  include:

  •  Increase the total campus building area considered “high performance” (LEED certified) from 14% to 42%
  • Increase the total amount of campus solid waste diverted from the landfill from 25% to 50%
  • Decrease the total campus energy use by 25%
  • Increase campus shuttle ridership to more than 60,000 riders per month
  • More than double the amount of campus areas in perpetual conservation easement from 15 to 33 acres

We hope taking these steps now to create a greener campus will lead the way to creating a more sustainable world.
